Smart Load® from EMC Technology offers true RMS power detection!

EMC Technology’s Smart Load® is a temperature compensated termination used for power sensing applications. The power sensing termination provides true RMS power detection in applications where power sensing is required. The device operates up to 6 GHz with a VSWR of 1.25 in a temperature range from -55 to 125°C. The Smart Load® is offered as a single passive chip solution and replaces complex and expensive power sensing circuitry. The component is surface mountable in a low profile package with a small footprint of only 3.81 mm square.

Smart Loads® replace older power detection methods such as Schottky diodes, tunnel diodes, and bridge circuits. The power sensing termination can be used in signal detection and separation and in fault detection circuit schematics. Typical applications for the Smart Load® include amplifiers, transceivers, receivers, and built-in test equipment (BITE).

The Smart Load® can be used in conjunction with EMC Technology’s patented Thermopad® , which is a temperature variable attenuator. In this combination the products can replace closed or open-loop temperature compensation schemes combined with power sensing circuitry. These resistive devices may replace a host of parts that would otherwise be required, reducing total system cost and enhancing reliability. Since the Smart Load® and Thermopad® are resistive thick-film devices, they introduce zero distortion while offering a linear response.
